W3Schools exam rules: attempts, retakes, time limit and levels
Short answer
Every W3Schools certification exam is online and timed: about 60 adaptive multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. Three attempts are included and there is no deadline to use them. You pass at 40% (Intermediate); 75% is Advanced and 90% is Professional. If you fail all three attempts, you can buy the exam again for three more.
The rules in one table
| Format | Online, multiple choice, adaptive |
|---|---|
| Questions | About 60 (adaptive, so it varies slightly) |
| Time limit | 60 minutes, counted from when you start |
| Attempts included | 3 |
| Deadline | None. Start whenever you are ready. |
| Pass mark | 40% |
| Levels | Intermediate 40%, Advanced 75%, Professional 90% |
| Proctoring | None |
| Result | Immediately after you finish |
| Certificate | Issued in your name with the level, a verification link and a QR code. Never expires. |
How the adaptive exam works
The exam adjusts question difficulty to your answers. Answer correctly and the next question is harder; answer wrong and it is easier. This is how the exam decides your level, and it is why two people can see different questions. Answer each question carefully as you go.
Attempts and retakes
- Three attempts come with every exam purchase, whether you bought the course or the exam alone.
- Passed at Intermediate but want Advanced or Professional? Use your remaining attempts to go for a higher level.
- If you use all three attempts without passing, you can purchase the exam again for three new attempts.
- Attempts never expire.
Before you start
- Use a desktop or laptop with a stable connection.
- Block off a full hour. Once you start, the 60 minutes run without pausing.
- Do the free tutorial quiz on w3schools.com first. It is the closest thing to a practice exam.
What is allowed
The exam is not proctored. It is designed to be taken closed-book, and the time limit makes looking things up impractical: one question per minute. The result is a level, not just pass or fail, so you gain nothing by scraping through.
After you pass
The certificate is available in your W3Schools account immediately as a PDF. Add it to LinkedIn and your CV with the verification link.
