Guide
Is a W3Schools certificate worth it?
Short answer
Yes, if you want a cheap, verifiable proof that you know a specific technology. A W3Schools certification costs $95 one-time (course, exam and certificate), the exam is a 60-minute adaptive test, and the certificate never expires and can be verified by anyone through a link or QR code. It is not an accredited degree and it will not replace a portfolio, so treat it as one line on your CV that an employer can check in ten seconds.
What you actually get for $95
Every W3Schools certification is one technology, one exam, one certificate. The course costs $95 and includes the exam and the certificate. If you already know the subject, the exam on its own is also $95. There are 45+ certifications, from HTML, CSS and JavaScript to Python, SQL, Java, C++, React, TypeScript and Cyber Security.
Online, multiple choice and adaptive: about 60 questions in 60 minutes. Three attempts are included. 40% passes (Intermediate), 75% is Advanced and 90% is Professional. There is no deadline for taking the exam and the certificate never expires.
What the certificate is, and is not
- It is a verified credential: your name, the technology, the level you reached and a unique verification URL (verify.w3schools.com) plus a QR code. Anyone can check it.
- It is recognised by name. W3Schools is used by more than 60 million developers every month, so a hiring manager has almost certainly used the site.
- It is not an accredited academic qualification, and it is not proctored. It proves you passed a timed test on the material, not that you have shipped production code.
When it is worth it
- You are early in your career or switching careers and your CV has nothing verifiable on it yet.
- You are applying for roles where the recruiter screens for keywords (HTML, SQL, Python) before a human reads the CV.
- You need a deadline. Buying the exam is a cheap way to force yourself to finish the course.
- You are in a non-IT role (analyst, marketer, designer) and want to show you can work with code or data.
When it is not worth it
- You already have 3+ years of professional experience in that technology. Your work history outweighs any certificate.
- You need an accredited qualification for immigration, a university or a regulated job.
- You expect the certificate alone to get you hired. It opens the door; the interview is still yours to pass.
